In the world of cybersecurity, the term “virus” is common, but few know about the first one ever created. Known as Creeper, this program holds the distinction of being the first computer virus, laying the foundation for both cyber threats and the development of modern antivirus software.
The Creeper virus was developed in 1971 by Bob Thomas, a researcher at BBN Technologies. It wasn’t created with malicious intent, unlike today’s malware. Instead, Creeper was an experimental program, designed as a proof of concept to test self-replicating programs and the movement of software between systems.
The Creeper virus infected DEC PDP-10 computers running the TENEX operating system on the ARPANET, which was a precursor to the modern internet. Unlike today’s viruses, it didn’t cause harm or steal data. Instead, it displayed a simple message:
“I’m the creeper, catch me if you can!”
The message was harmless, but it was significant as it demonstrated the possibility of a program moving from one computer to another without user intervention.
Creeper was created to move through the early network of ARPANET. It would hop from one system to another, and when it found a new machine to infect, it would display its message. What made Creeper unique was that it didn’t replicate or spread in the way modern viruses do. Instead, it was more like a wandering program that erased itself from the previous computer once it moved to a new one. This made it more of an early worm rather than a virus.
Soon after Creeper began spreading, a program called Reaper was created to track down and remove it. Reaper is often considered the first antivirus program. While Creeper didn’t cause harm, it prompted researchers to think about countermeasures for software that could move across systems without authorization.
The creation of Creeper and Reaper highlighted the potential for both viruses and antivirus technologies. It also foreshadowed the future of cybersecurity, where self-replicating software could potentially do damage. As the internet evolved, so did the sophistication of these programs, leading to the complex viruses and malware we see today.
Creeper’s non-malicious nature stands in stark contrast to the sophisticated, harmful viruses that came later, but its role in computer history is undeniable. It served as the first demonstration of what would become one of the most persistent issues in modern computing—viruses.
The Creeper virus may have been more of a playful experiment than a real threat, but its impact on the development of computer security is lasting. It marked the beginning of the digital arms race between viruses and antivirus programs, shaping the cybersecurity industry as we know it today.
As the first of its kind, Creeper opened the door to many of the challenges that the cybersecurity world continues to battle.
