Phishing Scams: How to Protect Yourself

Phishing scams are a type of cyberattack that attempts to steal your personal information, such as your credit card numbers, passwords, and social security numbers. Cybercriminals typically pretend to be a reputable company or organization, such as your bank, credit card company, or internet service provider, and send you an email or text message that appears to be from them. The email or text message will often contain a link that, when clicked, will take you to a fake website that looks like the real website of the company or organization. Once you enter your personal information on the fake website, the cybercriminals will be able to steal it.

Here are some tips for staying safe from phishing scams:

  • Be suspicious of any unsolicited emails or text messages that ask for your personal information. Legitimate companies will never ask you to provide your personal information via email or text message.
  • Hover your mouse over any links in the email or text message before you click on them. This will reveal the real URL of the link, which you can check to make sure it is the legitimate website of the company or organization.
  • Never enter your personal information on a website that you are not sure is legitimate. If you are not sure whether a website is legitimate, you can contact the company or organization directly to verify.
  • Keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date. This will help protect you from phishing attacks that attempt to install malware on your computer.
  • Educate yourself about phishing scams. The more you know about phishing scams, the better equipped you will be to spot and avoid them.

Here are some additional tips for staying safe online:

  • Use strong passwords and change them regularly.
  • Be careful about what information you share online.
  • Be cautious about clicking on links in emails or on social media.
  • Be aware of the latest scams and security threats.

By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from phishing scams and other cyberattacks.
